NHRA Top Alcohol Driver Mark Niver Killed

An NHRA Top Alcohol driver has died during an NHRA national competition for the second time in a month. Mark Niver, 60, died when his parachutes detached from his car during eliminations at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways outside Seattle, Washington. Niver had completed his run when the parachutes deployed and separated from the dragster. The Top Alcohol rail hit the gravel trap at nearly race speed, causing the front end to flip up and land in the cockpit.

Fellow NHRA racer Neal Parker was killed June 11 at the NHRA SuperNationals in Englishtown, NJ. According to friends and family, Niver was a master machinist who built his dragster by himself.
